Calle Mayor

This memorial is to the victims of the attempted regicide of Alphonse XIII and Victoria Eugenia on May 31, 1906. The newly-weds’ procession was on its way back from the church to the Royal Palace through the crowded street, when an anarchist threw a bomb from the top floor of No. 84. Unfortunately for the would-be assassin, his throw was diverted by the overhead tram wires, and landed amongst the crowd, rather than in the royal carriage, killing 25 people and wounding many more. The King and Queen were unharmed, and the procession galloped off to the safety of the nearby Royal Palace.
