This is, for us, coming from the UK, one of the highlights of being in Madrid. There are lots of top-quality bakeries producing terrific bread and pastries.

One of these, Obrador, is on San Francisco, twenty metres from the apartment (turn right), and has great sourdough pistolas (baguettes) and loaves. Their chocolate-chip cookies are sinful and, on the days they have them, the cardamom and cinnamon buns are brilliant.

Just beside Obrador is Cultivo, a great cheese shop. There are so many cheeses, you are mesmerised, but the staff are happy to talk you through the different varieties. Don’t get carried away – it’s quite pricey!
Another great bakery is Novo Mundo on Calle del Carnero, about a ten-minute walk. We go there for their bread, but most people seem to go there for their coffee and pastries, which are indescribable. Get there early if you are going on Sunday, as the queue is down the block!
We can also strongly recommend Panefiesto, on Calle de la Encomienda in Lavapies, and if you are walking near the Royal Palace or the Opera, try Quadra Panis on Plaza del Oriente.
